"TVA River Forecast Center"

Inside Tennessee Valley Authority’s River Forecast Center, a high tech, state of the art operations hub, teams of highly trained experts work around the clock to monitor and manage one of the region’s most critical systems, supporting both flood control and hydroelectric power generation.

During a recent visit, members of the PRSA Volunteer Chapter got a behind-the-scenes look at how TVA oversees more than 650 miles of the Tennessee River system and the network of tributaries that feed into it. Inside the center, engineers track conditions in real time, using advanced tools and data to make informed decisions that help reduce flood risk, generate hydroelectric power, and support communities across the Valley.

As weather conditions shift, those decisions can happen quickly. Adjustments to hydroelectric dams are carefully coordinated to balance river levels, protect downstream areas, and maintain the overall health of the system. Across TVA’s 49 dams, that work also supports reliable energy, water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and water supply, which communities across the Valley rely on for drinking water, from small towns to major cities.

But the visit also highlighted another critical piece of the operation beyond the control room.

PRSA members heard from TVA’s communications and social media teams about how complex, fast-moving information is translated into clear, timely updates for the public. Whether during routine operations or severe weather events, close coordination between engineers and communicators ensures communities receive consistent, accurate information when it matters most.

It’s a system built on precision, expertise, and constant collaboration, working together to serve the people of the Tennessee Valley.
