PRSA Member Spotlights serve the purpose of highlighting remarkable members of our Chapter who are making an impact in the field of public relations. Chelsey Russell, assistant vice president and internal communications manager at SmartBank, earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and is entering her seventh year with the company.
Chelsey’s career in communications didn’t follow a conventional path. She began in retail management, where she discovered the value of clear communication, team engagement and customer relations. That experience sparked her interest in both external and internal communication, leading her to pursue roles in human resources and, eventually, internal communications. “The blend of strategy, storytelling, and human connection is what drew me in, and has kept me passionate about this work ever since”, Russell said.
Speaking about her personal values, Russell said, “Empathy, curiosity and integrity are at the heart of how I work.” She believes communication isn’t solely about pushing messages out but about listening with intention and understanding your audience. These values have helped shape a culture at SmartBank where communication is authentic, people-focused, and rooted in trust.
One campaign that encapsulates how Russell and her team communicate was SmartBank’s employee action video project, which spotlighted how associates turned feedback into tangible action. For Russell, the campaign wasn’t just a feel-good moment, it demonstrated that SmartBank takes listening to its audience seriously. The project had a significant impact on employee trust and engagement, and it clearly reflected SmartBank’s values in action.
When asked how the public relations and communications industry has evolved since the beginning of her career, Russell stated how she’s felt a real shift towards authenticity, transparency, and two-way communication. “Audiences expect more than polished messages. They want real stories and honest dialogue”, Russell explained.
For Russell, the main factor in joining PRSA was the opportunity to connect with other passionate professionals and learn from them.
“PRSA has given me access to resources, learning opportunities and a network of professionals who have helped me grow in both skill and confidence,” Russell said. “Whether it’s webinars, conferences or simply connecting with other members, it’s been a great way to stay inspired and sharpen my craft.”
In reflecting on her own professional journey, Russell offered advice from young professionals starting out in the field today.
“Stay curious and adaptable. The tools and trends will change, but the heart of PR, building relationships and telling meaningful stories, stays the same,” Russell said. “Don’t underestimate the power of listening. Some of the best communication work comes from deeply understanding the people you’re serving.”
PRSA is proud to feature Chelsey Russell, a dedicated professional who is making an impact on the communications industry. Her commitment to continued learning, passion for communication and community engagement reflect the core values of PRSA and serve to inspire members across the organization.
