PRSA Member Spotlights highlight outstanding members who are making an impact in the field of public relations in our community and beyond. Jeff Gary is the director of creative services at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a position he has held for nearly nine years. A proud graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Gary earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism before realizing his passion was in public relations. He later earned a master’s degree in communications with a concentration in public relations from the College of Communication and Information at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Gary spent the majority of his career in higher education communications, with lengthy stints at both Maryville College and Roane State Community College. At Roane State Community College, Gary saw the impact public relations made, especially in telling the stories of first-generation students, and how taking the step to go to college had given them the opportunity to advance themselves and their career aspirations. The power to tell these stories to the region and future first-generation students was a privilege Gary deeply appreciated.
Gary has been an active member of PRSA for over a decade. When asked why he joined, he simply stated, “PRSA is the gold standard for our business,” the key factor that led him to become a member.
Recalling times when PRSA membership proved valuable, Gary fondly cited a research conference he attended while working at Maryville College. The information he learned from professionals at the conference supported rebranding the college’s alumni magazine. Later, he drew upon the research knowledge he gained at the conference to inform a large-scale rebranding effort at Roane State. The Roane State project, in particular, was a great success. Gary later included it in his portfolio when earning his Accreditation in Public Relations from PRSA.
Reflecting on his journey, Gary offered advice for young professionals in the field today, “Relationships are the most important thing. We used to say that 30 years ago, the mediums might have changed but the mantra has not.” He encouraged young professionals to “Make as many connections as you can build, get all those internships and build your portfolio. Then the jobs will come seeking you.”
Speaking about his experience with PRSA, Gary urges new members to get involved with their local chapter. He recommends attending as many meetings as possible and focusing on building a strong professional network. He also points to the PRSA national website as “a resource that is rich and deep,” offering free webinars, training opportunities, and professional development paths.
PRSA is proud to spotlight Jeff Gary, a committed professional making a meaningful difference in the public relations industry. His expertise, passion, and dedication to community engagement embody the core values of PRSA and serve as an inspiration to all members.
