Emma Minar | Published on 3/12/2025

Cynthia Moxley, the founder and former CEO of MoxCar Marketing + Communications, originally Moxley Communications, has built an impressive career in public relations. With decades of experience, she has become a respected leader in the Knoxville community, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.

Moxley’s career began in journalism as a newspaper reporter before she transitioned into public relations. She carried with her the invaluable lessons learned in journalism, particularly the importance of truth and transparency. Her background gave her a deep understanding of how reporters work, allowing her to bridge the gap between media professionals and clients effectively.

The journey to establishing MoxCar Marketing + Communications was a natural evolution rather than a sudden leap. As the firm gained clients, its growth felt organic, making the process more manageable. While challenging clients occasionally presented obstacles, Moxley recalls that the firm’s expansion was a steady and rewarding experience.

Honesty, kindness, and respect have been guiding principles throughout Moxley’s career. Among her proudest achievements is winning the Knoxville News Sentinel’s “Best Places to Work” award, a testament to the strong workplace culture she cultivated.
As a woman in the public relations industry, Moxley encountered challenges, particularly in gaining the respect of certain individuals and clients early in her career. Her approach to overcoming these hurdles was straightforward: excel at your job. She firmly believes that success speaks for itself and that competence is the best way to earn respect. Today, she celebrates the progress made, as many women now lead businesses in Knoxville, proving their capabilities through their work.

Mentorship has played a crucial role in Moxley’s journey. She credits several mentors for shaping her career. Ronald McMahan taught her perseverance, Jim Haslam instilled in her the value of community service, Jim Clayton emphasized the benefits of resilience and adaptability, and Randy Boyd inspired her with his energy and enthusiasm for both work and life.

Currently, Moxley serves as a strategic consultant for MoxCar Marketing + Communications while also running “The Blue Streak,” a popular local blog where she shares her love for Knoxville. Beyond her professional endeavors, she actively engages with the community and serves on the Board of the Big Ears Festival as well as the Board of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Though she was not initially a devoted symphony-goer, her involvement deepened her appreciation for the arts. Living in downtown Knoxville, she cherishes the strong sense of community and the connections she has built with her neighbors.

“I really believe in Knoxville,” Moxley shares. Her dedication to the city is evident through her professional successes, community involvement, and ongoing commitment to local organizations. She continues to embody service, leadership, and the spirit of Knoxville.
