On October 2, 2024, Christie Sithiphone, Vice President of Inclusion & Engagement at MMC, spoke with the PRSA Volunteer Chapter. With a focus on the intentionality behind diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, Sithiphone illuminated the impact of fostering an inclusive workplace culture. She shared compelling examples of programs and events designed to celebrate diversity and enhance employee engagement, while also emphasizing the vital role of personal development and wellness in achieving these goals.

Sithiphone’s strong cultural identity has been a cornerstone of her personal and professional journey. Drawing from her own experiences as a proud daughter of Laos refugees, she emphasized the significance of her heritage in her work at MMC and beyond. Her commitment to cultural understanding and connection serves as a strong reminder of the need for advocacy and empathy in the workplace. She aims to cultivate cultural fluency among colleagues, enabling them to better understand and support one another’s needs.

In her leadership role, Sithiphone champions a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere, inspiring others to embrace new experiences and perspectives. “There is always something we can do as leaders,” she stated, encouraging attendees to actively seek out opportunities for growth and connection. Her approach emphasizes that DEI extends far beyond mere celebrations; it is about genuinely understanding the diverse narratives that shape our workplace.

Sithiphone highlighted a range of innovative initiatives that facilitate employee engagement, including social clubs, employee spotlights on social media, and development and wellness programs. These efforts create meaningful relationships that empower individuals to share their stories and experiences.

Believing in and understanding those around us unlocks vast potential for growth. Sithiphone noted that a thriving culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential for a healthy workplace. Through meaningful connections, ongoing learning, and targeted programming, every employee has the opportunity to enhance their cultural fluency, paving the way for more successful relationships and a more dynamic work environment.

In conclusion, Sithiphone’s insights serve as a call to action for all leaders to prioritize DEI initiatives with sincerity and purpose. By embracing the richness of identities within our organizations, we not only enrich our workplace culture but also drive innovation and success.
